2016 ASCRS Annual Meeting Featured SpeakersThe ASCRS congratulates the following members who were recently honored in news articles:

Jean Ashburn, MD, was featured in a Shape article “Asking for a Friend: Why Am I Pooping Blood?” The article discusses what people should do if they discover blood in their stool.

Joseph P. Bannon, MD, was featured in the article “Clarks Summit Surgeon Joseph P. Bannon to Serve as Principal Speaker at the University of Scranton’s 2016 Graduate Commencement,” which was published in the Abington Journal, based in Clarks Summit, PA. Dr. Bannon is a Fellow of the ASCRS.

Robert Beart, MD, was featured in a Los Angeles Times article about his retirement. The Annual Education Symposia at Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital recently was renamed “The Robert W. Beart, M.D. Symposia for the Advancement of Colorectal Care.”

Craig Collins, MD, was recently featured in news brief published in the Daily Messenger in Canandaigua, NY. The brief focuses on Dr. Collins becoming a Fellow of the ASCRS.

Kyle Cologne, MD, was quoted in the article, “The Surprising Cause of Constipation That Can Only Happen to Women,” which was published in SELF Magazine. The article focuses on the causes, symptoms and treatment of rectocele. The article was later republished for Teen Vogue.

Don Colvin, MD, was quoted in the U.S. News & World Report article, “They Got What Stuck Where?” The article discuses medical workers retrieving foreign objects from patients’ rectums.

Susan Galandiuk, MD, was recently featured in the article, “U of L Professor of Surgery Named Editor-in-Chief of Prestigious Scientific Journal,” published in Newswise. Dr. Galandiuk, a professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville, recently was named editor-in-chief of Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, the scientific journal of The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS).

Eric Haas, MD, discussed his plan to reduce opioid use in hospitals in an article published by the Houston-based Spring Observer. Dr. Haas is Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital.

Neil Hyman, MD, was featured in a General Surgery News article, “Guideline Calls for Colonoscopy Before Resection to Find Second Tumors,” which focuses on a new U.S. Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer guideline recommending colonoscopies before resection to find second tumors.

Peter Marcello, MD, was featured in an article titled “Auburn Woman Shares her Victory over Colitis Thanks to Revolutionary Surgery,” which was published in the Telegram & Gazette, based in Worcester, MA.

Gerald Marks, MD, John Marks, MD, and Henry Schoonyoung, MD, were featured in a Patch article, “Wynnewood's Lankenau Opens New Colorectal Center,” which announced the opening of a new colorectal center at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, PA.

Don Read, MD, was featured in an article by a Dallas NPR affiliate, KERA, about overcoming West Nile Virus. In the article, Dr. Read discusses the risks of avoiding warning signs of the disease.

Patricia Roberts, MD, was recently featured in the article, “Burlington Resident Named ASCRS President,” which was published in Wicked Local.

Larissa K.F. Temple, MD, was quoted in a Medscape article about research that suggests using a stent to unblock the bowel in left-sided colorectal cancer patients before surgery could reduce the number of patients requiring a stoma. She described the trial as “incredibly important,” but noted that there is “much more to do” in further research.
