The Society approved four new Honorary Fellows at the Annual Business Meeting held during the Annual Meeting.
To qualify as an Honorary Fellow, an applicant may be recommended by unanimous vote of the Executive Council and formally approved by the voting members at the Annual Business Meeting. An Honorary Fellow is a physician who has made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of colon and rectal surgery or has achieved eminence in a field allied to colon and rectal surgery.
New Honorary Fellows approved at the Annual Business Meeting in May are:
Chuan-Gang Fu, MD, Shanghai, China
Dr. Fu is both an outstanding clinician and translational scientist. He has performed impressive work delineating molecular markers for radiation sensitivity in rectal cancer. He is widely published with papers that cover virtually the full gamut of benign and malignant colorectal disease. His expertise has been recognized by his appointment to no fewer than eight editorial boards of surgical journals, one of them being the Diseases of the Colon & Rectum.
Abe Fingerhut, MD, Poissy, France
Dr. Fingerhut is recognized around the world for his extraordinary ability as a surgeon, a researcher and a teacher. He has demonstrated live surgery and taught techniques and procedures in minimally invasive surgery and colorectal surgery in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and North America. He is also a prolific writer in the field of colon and rectal surgery and has sponsored a number of prospective randomized trials.
Emanuele Lezoche, MD, Rome, Italy
Dr. Lezoche is a colorectal surgeon of international reputation, with his particular area of interest the field of rectal cancer. As a consequence of his hard work and dedication to the field of changing the paradigm for patients with rectal cancer, he has undertaken a number of groundbreaking studies that are highly cited within international literature. In particular is his work comparing organ preservation techniques in combination with multimodality therapy, which have become the standard internationally within this field. Dr. Lezoche’s CV lists over 130 peer reviewed publications, and he serves as a member in good standing of virtually every significant European surgical society and many international societies.
Guillermo Osvaldo Rosato, MD, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Dr. Rosato is considered to be one of the finest coloproctologists in Latin America, specializing in surgical treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus. Since 2000, he has held the rank of Professor in Surgery at the Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires and Universidad Austral. He has co-authored ten textbook chapters and has published many review and peer-reviewed articles. This year he served as President of the 38th Congreso Argentino de Coloproctologia. Eligibility for membership in the Society under any other membership category does not disqualify one from eligibility for Honorary Fellowship. Honorary Fellows are not required to pay dues and shall not vote or hold office.
