2014 ASCRS Annual Meeting attracts 2,563 attendees, introduces E-Posters and “town hall” debates

The 2014 ASCRS Annual Scientific Meeting in Hollywood, FL was a huge success, with total attendance of 2,563, including 1,592 physicians (353 students/residents), 74 nurses/allied health, and 709 exhibitors. New ASCRS year begins on a high note after very successful Annual Scientific Meeting in Florida

The new ASCRS year begins with a bright horizon, after the very successful Annual Scientific Meeting in Hollywood, Florida—a beautiful venue for us in many ways. Regretfully, the Society has now outgrown the Hollywood facilities and won’t be able to return for some time to come. ASCRS registered 1,592 physicians in Florida, one of our best turnouts.

Presidential Address draws analogy to aviation industry in challenge to Society on surgical quality, safety
Dr. Michael Stamos By Michael J. Stamos, MD

In a stirring presidential address, outgoing ASCRS President Dr. Michael J. Stamos drew an analogy to the aviation industry, as he challenged the Society not to rest on its laurels as leaders in quality and safety, but “be engaged as active participants” in continuing to change the health care system for the better.

ASCRS Members more than “Meet the Challenge” for Research Foundation at Hollywood Annual Meeting

The ASCRS Research Foundation raised $85,751 during the 10th annual "Meet the Challenge" program, held during the opening reception of the 2014 Annual Meeting in Hollywood, FL. The total raised surpasses the 2013 fundraiser by over $22,000. Industry partners Applied Medical, Covidien, THD, Inc., and thirteen Regional Colon and Rectal Societies pledged a total of $38,050 for the 2014 fundraiser.

ASCRS Website Committee to reinvent Society’s Website
At the recommendation of the ASCRS Website Committee, chaired by Dr. David A. Margolin, New Orleans, LA, the Executive Council has agreed that a thorough redevelopment of www.fascrs.org is necessary to update the site and expand its functionality and member offerings.

Society gives award for colorectal cancer advocacy, three National Media Awards, new Local Hero Award

The Society presented the 2014 David Jagelman, MD, Award for Advocacy in Colorectal Cancer and three 2014 National Media Awards for excellence in coverage of colon and rectal disease at the Annual Meeting in Hollywood, FL. In addition, the Society’s new Local Hero Award, which was established to honor a patient affected by colorectal disease who resides in the area of the annual meeting, was presented to Earl Stewart, a Lake Park, FL, automobile dealer.

An Honorary Fellow is a physician who has made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of colon and rectal surgery or has achieved eminence in a field allied to colon and rectal surgery.

Executive Council approves new policy of selling exclusive sponsored e-blasts

After receiving requests from several industry partners, the ASCRS Executive Council has approved a new policy of selling exclusive sponsored e-blasts to our industry partners and Annual Meeting exhibitors. The new policy is similar to those offered by other professional societies and will generate additional revenue for ASCRS. Here is how the new policy will work:
