The ASCRS Annual Meeting Program Committee’s goal was to provide something for everyone in every type of colon and rectal surgery practice—individual or small group community practice, multispecialty clinic, or academic, according to Program Chair Dr. Charles Whitlow, New Orleans, LA.
“If you are interested in how to improve yourself in colon and rectal surgery, no matter what kind of practice you have, you are going to find things to do in Vancouver to help you with that goal,” Dr. Whitlow says.

Special lectures often provide the most memorable moments at an ASCRS Annual Meeting, and each day in Vancouver, May 14-18, will feature a special presentation sure to live up to this expectation.
As always, the ASCRS President will make a special address, and among the other special lecturers are four of the Society’s past presidents.

It has been an exciting year, and while I’ve been honored to serve as your president, it would be lying to say I’m also not looking forward to achieving the most coveted status of past president.
As expected, our Program Chair Dr. Charles Whitlow, Vice Chair Dr. Alan Herline and the Program Committee have worked hard to put together what promises to be an outstanding meeting in the exciting city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (May 14-18, 2011).

ICCP, ASCRS forum showcases volunteering, outreach in countries where needs exist |

The International Council of Coloproctology, together with ASCRS, will provide a forum during the Vancouver meeting, May 14-18, 2011, to showcase the work of any members of ICCP and/or ASCRS who have participated in Volunteering and Outreach in countries in which needs exist, by assisting with colorectal surgical services.
In addition, ICCP has been active in the promotion and development of Bowel Cancer Awareness Programs in ICCP member countries.

| Society joins American Cancer Society as sponsor of Final Four Coaches Huddle |

ASCRS this year became a platinum sponsor of the 2011 Final Four Coaches Huddle event hosted by Coaches vs. Cancer and the American Cancer Society (ACS), held April 1-2 during the “Final Four” weekend of the NCAA national college basketball championship.
As part of the sponsorship, Public Relations Committee Chair Dr. Harry T. Papaconstantinou, Temple, TX, and Dr. Walter R. Peters, Jr. Columbia, MO, participated in interviews with the coaches at the Final Four site in Houston, TX. Many of these interviews were carried on CBS-TV, and they will be available to the Society for the Website or future colon cancer awareness publicity.

In Memoriam: W. Douglas Wong, M.D. – 1948-2011 |
We are deeply saddened to report that ASCRS past president (2007 – 2008), W. Douglas Wong, M.D., died on Thursday, January 20, 2011, as a result of a progressive degenerative neurological illness. Doug was born in 1948 in Brandon, Canada, a small town in Manitoba settled in part by Chinese immigrants after completion of the Canadian Pacific Railroad in 1885. Doug often spoke of his family’s roots and recounted with justified pride their history of overcoming discrimination and difficult times to succeed in Canada.
The love of Doug’s life was Sola. As a young nursing student, she had emigrated from her home in Hong Kong to Canada.
